It’s been three years now since I left dear old Blighty for Australia, full of nerves and excitement. At the time I was looking forward to not teaching for a while, to a more laid back lifestyle, to the weather, to just trying something different and also to being with the lovely Diver Dave! I remember also being sad to leave my friends and worried about being so far from family, especially leaving them at the blunt end of a house sale gone wrong. However, if it weren’t for all those people, I wouldn’t have been able to go when I did and I feel very lucky to have had their support in..er…leaving the country. Mmm….

Once in Australia I started a masters degree course in Brisbane at an international campus. As part of the induction I had to attend an ‘acculturation’ course designed to support students moving to a foreign country. Diver Dave and I scoffed a little bit at this, especially when it was suggested that my initial stage of ‘euphoria’ would eventually be replaced by deep depression and anxiety! However, even though thankfully I haven’t reached that scary sounding stage, it can be hard to adjust your expectations whilst trying to fit into a new culture and society, even one as pommie filled and westernised as Australia.

So this blog is intended to advise others who may be thinking of emigrating or have recently arrived. And I promise not to whinge too much!
